On April 20, 2016, Wisconsin Representative Mark Pocan introduced the Tribal Marijuana Sovereignty Act

The bill (full version found here) protects Tribes from being punished for participating in the cannabis industry and prevents the Federal Government from considering a Tribe's cannabis laws when allocating federal dollars and benefits.

The Tribal Marijuana Sovereignty Act lies in direct opposition to the "Keeping Out Illegal Drugs Act" or "KIDS Act" introduced by last August by Freshman Oklahoma Senator James Lankford which specifically aimed to prohibit Tribes from cultivating, manufacturing and distributing marijuana. Many saw the effort by Senator Lankford as a direct attack on Tribal Sovereignty and in furtherance of a Tribal termination policy.

We applaud the efforts of Representative Pocan's efforts and introduction of the bill. The bill has been referred to committee for further review.
